wMu Special Day Offering

The first wMu Special Day was begun in 1951 to promote and collect for special missions causes recommended by the Mississippi wMu
Executive Board. In 1972, the wMu Special Day Offering became the “Edwina Robinson wMu Special Day Offering” as the wMu Executive Board
honored Miss Ed the year after her retirement as Executive Secretary of Mississippi wMu.
Edwina “Miss Ed” Robinson was born in Magee, Mississippi, March 12, 1906, the oldest of three children. She attended school in Magee and
was salutatorian of her class. After high school, she enrolled in Blue Mountain College where she majored in music. At Blue Mountain she was
active in all phases of campus life including drama, social events, and religious activities. During her senior year she attended a student
conference in Columbus. The theme of the convention made a lasting impression on her. Across the front of the church auditorium in large
letters were the words: “You’re the best Christian that somebody knows.”
After graduation, Edwina taught school for one year. She then went to Louisville, Kentucky to attend the wMu Training School. Following
that she went to work as Youth Secretary at First Baptist Church in Chattanooga, Tennessee. From there she went to San Marco, Texas, as
Educational Director.
In 1933, Miss Ed returned to her home state of Mississippi to accept the position of Young People’s Secretary for Mississippi wMu. In her
position she directed the work for all young people’s organizations (Young Women’s Auxiliary, Girls Auxiliary, Royal Ambassadors, and Sunbeams).
In 1935, under her direction, a camping program for GAs, RAs and YWAs was started with camps held in different locations in the state. In
1942 her dream of a camp became reality when Mississippi College provided 40 acres of land for the purpose of a Christian camp. Dedication
of Camp Garaywa was held on April 2, 1947.
Miss Ed’s hands did not become idle even in retirement. She spent several years working with New York wMu as well as working in Ohio, the
Northwest, and Northern Plains conventions. She also spent several months working with wMu in English-speaking churches in Europe. The
Special Day offering provides scholarships for SBC seminary students, emergency missionary needs, gifts to missionary kids, and aged
minister and widows as well as other various ministries of wMu.
