Mississippi Baptist Historical Commission
The Mississippi Baptist Historical Commission is an agency of the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board (mbcb.org) composed of primary and secondary sources relating to Mississippi Baptist history, most notably Mississippi Baptist churches and Baptist associations. The Commission also maintains biographical information on Mississippi Baptist preachers and other significant individuals relating to the Mississippi Baptist Convention. Materials are available in a variety of formats, including published books; unpublished manuscripts; microfilm; serials, including The Baptist Record; vertical files; oral histories; and photographs.
Original church minutes and documents, dating from the early 1800s, are maintained in the fireproof vault. In the reading room, a variety of materials are available, including annuals from the Mississippi Baptist Convention and Southern Baptist Convention from 1836 and 1859, respectively. Indexes and other finding aids for the collection are available for public use.
In cooperation with the Mississippi Baptist Convention Board, the Historical Commission is excited to announce that Mississippi Baptists: A History of Southern Baptists in the Magnolia State is here! Dr. Bob Rogers, former Mississippi Baptist pastor and retired chaplain at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, has revised and updated Dr. R.A. McLemore’s A History of Mississippi Baptists which was published in 1971. This new history is written in a narrative style and we hope the book will have a broad appeal to all Mississippi Baptists who want to know about their spiritual roots, as well as, Mississippians in general.
